lionchu lunch

Lionchu munching down on sakari purple. It's amazing how they go for this when the water warms up.

SxK rejects from David L.

7-26-2014

Reject S x K ranchu from Goldfish Garage. Not very many nice tails in here but I'm going to use these for an experimental cross to see if I can get good spawn from these fish. My guess is that when I re-shuffle the genomes of these fish by crossing I will "hit the jackpot" with some of the offspring.

SxK spawn

A small batch of SxK hatched today.

July 17th, 2014 - Adult lionchu in the greenhouse. The amount of wen has grown tremendously since putting these fish in the greenhouse. I think that the green water may have triggered this growth. These fish are ~ 3.5 years old.

Lionchu Spawn

7-1-14

Lionchu spawn. I moved the adult lionchu into the greenhouse on the first of June. The first spawn produced about 150 fish. A subsequent spawn produced 25 fish. There are a lot of dorsal fins showing up in this cross. I wonder if this is due to these fish being hybrids and there not being complete redundancy in the mutation(s) that knocked out the dorsal fin.

Water change in the fish room

30 July 2013

I had to do some repairs to the pond today that required draining most of the water. It provided a great opportunity for this video.

Pond Fish

Young of the year pond fish. These were from spawns in the spring (5/10/13) and raised in the recirculating system in the greenhouse. Today (7/29/13) I moved these fish back out to the pond to fatten up and overwinter.

Pond Fish Fry and Nursery

I eventually took the fry out of the 30 gallon tank used the 50 gallon stock tank that is pictured underneath. The one issue that I had with this set-up was that there was a lot of muck build-up in the fry tank. Next year, I will flow the fry tank with water coming out of the filter to hopefully reduce the muck.

Pond spawning event

5/1/13

The water in the pond is very green. We have been having unseasonably warm weather with temps in the mid to upper 70s. The pond fish started spawning during the approach of a weather front that brought a touch of rain.

SxK spawn

First SxK's first spawn!! They hatched 4/9-4/10. 30 - 40 embryos. Not a huge clutch but a start.

05 April 2013

Spawning set up in the green house. Two 100 gallon rubber maid troughs with sponge filters driven by the air pump located on the bench in front of the troughs. The green grassy stuff are spawning mops. Update on egg fish spawning: I have seen many eggs on the mops but no sign of fertilization. I think that I may have all female fish.

Spring Spawn

I put spawning mops into the pond and tubs in the greenhouse on Friday as a noticed some chasing happening in the pond. On Saturday, pond fish have spawned and Calico Egg Phoenix have spawned. I can't ID any males in the Calico Phoenix fish so hopefully they eggs are fertile.

BEPs in the greehouse

3-17-13

BEPs and Calico Phoenix into the greenhouse. The plan is to feed them bloodworms and try and get some spawns out of them. The greenhouse was 78 F when I was working in there yesterday. More to come...(hopefully)

28 December 2011

These are the final selected fish from the pond spawn. There are a few double tails. Most of the double tails are brown. The other single tails have magnificent colors. Almost all of the colored fish are nacreous lacking guanine.

Sept 2011 - New fish from Gray, Cincy Ranchu. These are left overs from the past summers Social. Here are some details about the origins of these fish.
From Gary: These BEP fish came from Gerard Siew on this page, he lives in Montreal. The Calico Phoenix came from Washington DC from Russ Taylor. Russ bred the calicoes or got them from me or Jim Fleeker, they were an outcross to a dorsaless fish. He will be excited to see that you are into them, he also has more BEP with different genetics

I have these fish growing in a 125 being fed Hikari purple 3x per day. There is excellent growth of the calicos and decent growth of the BEP.
